1. Use a heavier oil-based moisturizer.
A heavier oil-based moisturizer will lock in extra moisture, keeping your hair from becoming dry and brittle. In winter, natural hair, curls, and coils can be sensitive to the cold climate, especially if your hair already feels dry, brittle, or has split ends. A thicker or heavier oil-based moisturizer takes longer to evaporate, which helps maximize absorption into your hair.
2. Minimize heat-styling and overheating your hair.
Blow dryers, flat irons, wands, and curlers contribute to dry, brittle, and damaged hair. We also tend to use them more often in colder months. Give your hair some rest, and opt for air drying in the winter to prevent heat damage and hairstyles that don’t require heated tools. Some great hairstyles are braids, twists, ponytails, buns, and other protective styles.
3. Commit to regular deep conditioning treatments.
Weekly deep conditioning treatments in winter will help replenish all the lost moisture during the week. Try deep conditioning at home, leaving it in for 30 minutes before rinsing to revive your hair each week. Regular deep-conditioning treatments will help your hair stay healthy and moisturized through the cold months.
