Parabens = Preservastives

Writer: Ansha ClementAnsha Clement

Parabens are also known as Alkyl parahydroxybenzoates. It is a chemical used as an antifungal agent in hair products. Common sense would suggest that parabens are necessary because not everyone wants to use moldy products or products with an overgrowth of bacteria. So why are parabens toxic?

Parabens:

1) Build-up in the body with long-term use

2) Mimic estrogen and eventually interferes with estrogen production

3) Are associated with hair loss

4) Cause ecological harm

5) Are linked to breast cancer and reproductive issues

Common parabens in hair products are:

  • Methylparaben C₈H₈O₃

  • Ethylparaben C₉H₁₀O₃

  • Propylparaben C₁₀H₁₂O₃

  • Butylparaben C₁₁H₁₄O₃
